Brand: The Blue Door
The Brief: A private client requested a "portable, stool-like" accent piece that could serve as both a functional seat and a striking modern sculpture within a contemporary bedroom setting.
01. Concept & Design Research
The objective was to move away from traditional static seating and create an "eye-catching" object that felt dynamic. I took inspiration from origami and geometric tessellation to develop a form that changes its visual profile based on the viewer's perspective.
The Inspiration: Mathematical symmetry and modular portability.
Aesthetic Goal: Minimalist luxury with a high-contrast material palette.
02. Technical R&D & Development
Because the brief required the product to be "portable," the R&D phase focused heavily on the weight-to-strength ratio of the frame.
Structural Engineering: I developed a multi-axial "Z-frame" using CNC-machined alloy to ensure maximum stability with minimal material volume.
Upholstery Integration: Designed a recessed top-plate that allows the upholstered cushion to sit flush within the metal frame, creating a seamless transition between the hard and soft materials.
Ergonomic Precision: Despite its sculptural look, the height and surface tension were engineered for short-term seating comfort, adhering to strict ergonomic standards.
03. The Result
The final product is a modular "Flip-Ottoman" that functions as a standalone statement piece or a nested pair. It successfully bridges the gap between Industrial Design and Interior Art, proving that even small-scale portable objects can drive the "modern vibe" of an entire room.
